5/22/2025 All of the following was spontaneously reported by the caller. The caller reports developing blue nasal discharge, headache, ear ringing, hearing loss, and ear fullness from an accidental nasal and respiratory exposure to the InVigor L333PC Hybrid seed that was treated with BUTEO and Helix Vibrance. He states the exposure occurred on 20-May-2025 while seeding with Invigor 333 and then had been dumping a canola tank to be able to change over to another canola seed, when the wind picked up and started swirling blue dust. when the wind unexpectedly swirled up and blew particles of the product into his face, some went up his nose. He denies breathing, coughing or sneezing at the time. Later that night, he had some blue nasal drainage and denies any runny nose, respiratory or eye symptoms at this time. He began to experience a headache, ringing and fullness in his left ear with some hearing loss the next morning. He has been treating his symptoms by irrigating with saline and has not yet reach out to a health care provider. His symptoms have improved and the ringing and fullness have lessened, but he was not sure if his symptoms are related to the product exposure or something else. He has worked with seed for many years and has never had this experience in the past.
This assessment reviews the role of BUTEO start 480 FS in the described exposure. Company correlation score: 4 (possible relationship). The consumer reported blue nasal discharge which may have resulted from blue colored dust getting caught in the nose and sinuses after inhalation on a windy day. The BUTEO start 480 FS product itself is beige in color but the InVigor L333PC seeds are blue. Working outside on a windy day can lead to inhalation of seed and/or environmental dust which may cause mild self-limiting congestion. The consumer describes congestion symptoms including, nasal discharge, headache, ear fullness, ringing and decreased hearing which can result from nasal congestion and inflammation in the sinuses. Symptoms improved within days, consistent with minor inhalation of dust particles. Overall, the dose at which the consumer would have been exposed to BUTEO start 480 FS, found in low concentrations after being applied to seeds, given the described exposure would be minimal and not expected to result in systemic toxicity.
