On approximately 14-Aug-2023, a 3 year old, 14 pound, neutered, male, Domestic Shorthair cat, in unknown condition, with a concomitant medical condition of fleas, was administered 1 collar of Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea and Tick Collar for Cats (Tetrachlorvinphos (Rabon) / S Methoprene) via the topical route by the animal owner. On approximately 17-Aug-2023, the cat became depressed. On approximately 21-Aug-2023, the cat developed vomiting, anorexia, weakness, difficulty walking, and had blood-tinged saliva coming from its mouth. On 23-Aug-2023, the clinical signs significantly worsened. On 24-Aug-2023, the cat died at home. The collar was removed after the cat died and the animal owner discovered that the cat had application site scabs and application site rash. On 25-Aug-2023, the cat was cremated. Assessment: This product contains tetrachlorvinphos, an organophosphate insecticide, that is considered to have a good margin of safety in cats. The active ingredient is poorly absorbed across intact skin. If product residue were ingested only mild GI upset would be expected. The severe signs reported with progression to death are not anticipated. Other causes including dietary indiscretion, underlying metabolic disease, severe flea bite anemia, unknown trauma or toxin exposure should also be considered in this case. Without veterinary evaluation and diagnostics including necropsy, the cause of death remains unknown and the relationship to product use is inconclusive. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
