(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On approximately 29-Sep-2020, a 3 year old, 48 pound, neutered, male, Spaniel - Springer English dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, had 1 Hartz UltraGuard Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs - White (Tetrachlorvinphos) placed around the neck by the animal owner. On 30-Sep-2020, the dog was found outside laying on the ground with dilated pupils (mydriasis), decreased respiratory rate, and jaundiced ear pinnas. The collar was removed and the dog was evaluated by a veterinarian. Unknown diagnostics and blood work revealed liver failure and unknown treatments were performed. On 01-Oct-2020 the dog died while hospitalized. Necropsy was discussed but it is unknown if it was ultimately performed. This was a first time use of the product. No further information was received.
Mort
Assessment: Inconclusive. Tetrachlorvinphos is an organophosphate insecticide with low potency and a good safety margin in dogs especially following topical use. Liver failure is not consistent with the toxicological profile of the product. Other causes including hepatotoxin exposure (certain mushrooms, xylitol, acetaminophen, sago palm, etc.) should be considered given the young age of the dog and rapid onset of signs. Without specific results of diagnostics, direct discussion with the treating veterinarian, and necropsy results, this case cannot be assessed further. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
