On 21-Jun-2020, a 0.25 year old, 2 pound, intact, male, Domestic Longhair cat, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions, was administered 1 tube of Hartz UltraGuard OneSpot Drops for Cats (S Methoprene) via the topical route by the animal owner. On 22-Jun-2020, approximately 8 hours post product administration, the cat died and was then buried. No other clinical signs were observed prior to the cat's death. The animal owner also applied the same product to five other cats at the same time. Three cats remained asymptomatic. The other two cats developed seizures approximately 4 hours post product application. All cats were bathed with liquid dish soap for product removal. Both cats that developed a seizure, were evaluated by a veterinarian that same day and hospitalized (coded as moderate severity). Unknown treatment was performed by the veterinarian. On 23-Jun-2020 the animal owner reported that one cat appeared to be improving but the other cat showed no improvement. No further information was received in this case.

Assessment: S-methoprene has a very wide margin of safety in cats especially following topical application. If ingested from the application site while still wet only minor oral irritation or GI upset would be expected. Other causes of sudden death in a young kitten should be considered including congenital abnormalities, infectious disease, other exposures (including possible accidental application of a canine product containing concentrated pyrethroid given seizures reported in other cats in the home), and unknown trauma. Without a necropsy the cause of death is unknown. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
