On 11-Jan-2020, a 1 year old, approximately 30 pound, intact, male, Doberman dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was administered 1 application of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (Phenothrin) via the topical route by the animal owner. Approximately thirty minutes post administration, the dog suddenly vocalized and then died at home. Though a veterinarian was willing to perform a necropsy it is unknown if one was completed. No further information was received in this case. No further information was received.

Assessment: The active ingredient is present in low concentration in this product and has a wide margin of safety in dogs. Sudden onset of vocalization and death following use is not expected. These signs are more consistent with a fatal cardiac event, pulmonary thromboembolism or other blood clot potentially due to underlying cardiac disease. Dobermans have a higher incidence of dilated cardiomyopathy than many other dog breeds and should be considered as a cause in this case. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
