On 29-Apr-2019, a 3 month old, 25 pound, intact, male, Terrier (Unspecified) crossbred dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions (though was unvaccinated), was administered 2 applications of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (Phenothrin) via the topical route by the animal owner. This was an extra label use as the product is not labeled for use in dogs under six months of age. On 01-May-2019, the dog developed lethargy, anorexia and adipsia. On 02-May-2019, the dog developed bloody diarrhea and the animal owner offered him raw eggs to eat. On 08-May-2019, the dog was found deceased at home. A second dog in the home was also bathed with the product and developed lethargy, anorexia, and bloody diarrhea approximately 10 days after use. Both dogs had not been evaluated by a veterinarian and no treatment had been performed. It is unknown if the animal owner pursued a necropsy. No further information was received.

Assessment: The active ingredient in this product is present in very low concentration and has a wide margin of safety in dogs. Even with misuse, signs on the severity reported progressing to death are not expected. The owner reported the dog had not been vaccinated. Parvoviral infection is highly suspected as the cause of signs and death in this case, though it is unknown if any post-mortem testing occurred. Another puppy in the home developed similar signs after this puppy died. No further information was received about that dog following the initial report. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
