On 04-Apr-2020, a 2 year old, approximately 10 pound, intact, female, Domestic (Unspecified) cat, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was administered 1 collar of Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Collar for Cat and Kittens (Tetrachlorvinphos / (S)-Methoprene) via the topical route by the animal owner. On 06-Apr-2020, the cat developed application site erythema, application site weeping (serosanguineous discharge), application site bleeding and application site hair loss. The affected area of skin spanned around the neck under the collar with the most severely affected area on the ventral aspect (underside) of the neck. On 07-Apr-2020, the collar was removed and an unknown amount of petroleum jelly was applied to the application site by the animal owner. The cat had not been evaluated by a veterinarian, no treatment had been performed and the clinical signs persisted at the time of the call. Veterinary evaluation was recommended. No further information was received in this case.

Assessment: Hypersensitivity can occur with any topical product and may be related to either the product's active or inactive ingredients. If moisture became trapped under the collar, acute moist dermatitis is possible. Also, if the cat was persistently scratching at the collar the skin near it can become damaged.
