(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On 17-Oct-2019 the pet owner applied Hartz UltraGuard Flea and Tick Spray for Cats (tetrachlorvinphos) to their cat for the first time to treat a flea infestation. Later that evening the owner bathed the cat using liquid dish soap to remove the product as the owner did not like the smell of the product. The morning of 18-Oct-2019 the owner's sister found the cat laying on the basement floor. The cat was panting and had muscle stiffness. The cat died a short time later and was buried. The cat may have been wearing a Hartz flea collar for cats (unknown active ingredient) but the owner could not recall if the collar was removed from the cat prior to application of the spray or not. No veterinary intervention occurred, and no necropsy was performed. No further information was received in this case.

Assessment: This product has a wide margin of safety in cats when used per label directions. Even if ingested from the fur following use, only mild oral irritation or gastrointestinal upset resulting in drooling or vomiting would be expected. Signs did not occur in this case until the following day and after the product was removed. Sudden onset of panting, muscle stiffness, and death are not expected even if the product was used in conjunction with a flea collar. Other causes including underlying cardiac disease leading to pulmonary or aortic thromboembolism (clot formation), neoplasia (cancer), and unknown toxin exposure should be considered in this case. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
