(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On September 28, 2015 the dog became symptomatic. Later that morning, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated melaleuca oil is an essential oil and cats are more sensitive, and grooming behavior can increase toxicity. The APSS veterinarian also stated clinical signs include ataxia, weakness, depression, hypothermia, behavioral abnormalities, and a transient paresis may develop. The APSS veterinarian additionally stated oral ingestions generally cause vomiting/diarrhea, central nervous system (CNS) depression, and seizures are possible in a large dose. The APSS veterinarian further stated if inhaled, aspiration pneumonia may be seen. The APSS veterinarian finally stated this product was applied dermally and rinsed off well; it is of minimal risk. The APSS veterinarian further stated some animals are more sensitive to the ingredients than others. The APSS veterinarian additionally stated signs often resolve after bathing and with topical applications of vitamin E and cool compresses, but may take up to 24-72 hours. The APSS veterinarian finally stated oral exposures can lead to hypersalivation, vomiting, and diarrhea. The APSS veterinarian recommended a bland diet (fast until this evening, water ok at all times, then offer boiled protein (no skin, fat, or seasonings) mixed with white rice in small portions (about 25% of normal); if diarrhea resolves gradually change back to regular diet over next 24-48 hours), taking the dog to the veterinarian (if diarrhea persists), and calling back with questions.
