On September 19, 22 and 24, 2015 shortly after the product was applied the kittens developed symptoms. On September 28, 2015 the owner contacted the manufacturer as she was upset the product did not work. The manufacturer transferred the owner to the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) due to the kittens' signs after application. The APSS veterinarian stated s-methoprene is an insect growth regulator (IGR). The APSS veterinarian also stated primary concerns from topical administration are hypersalivation and nausea. The APSS veterinarian further stated a number of pyrethrin spays contain isopropanol as a carrier and if animals are heavily saturated, there can be risks for alcohol intoxication. The APSS veterinarian finally stated if ingested, there can be signs of hypersalivation and nausea. The owner stated the kittens are fine now and she was not worried about them, but wanted to know what to do about the fleas. The APSS veterinarian recommended taking the kittens to the veterinarian (for physical exam (PE) and for recommendations on safe/effective flea products for kittens if not happy with this one), bathing the kittens (bathe kittens with liquid dish detergent), and discontinuing product usage (except for label use). The APSS veterinarian also discussed how to treat fleas and how products work.
