On September 29, 2015 the dog developed agitation, vocalization, and started tucking her tail. On September 30, 2015 the dog developed anorexia, adipisia, and lethargy, so the owner bathed the dog (liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD)). The owner then contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS technician stated some animals can be more sensitive to the ingredients and can experience a dermal reaction. The APSS technician recommended the owner apply vitamin E (to the application area), apply a cold compress (to the application area), monitor for dermatological signs (redness/irritation), and call back with questions (if signs continue beyond 4 hours).

Signs were expected to be mild and self-limiting. On September 30, 2015 the owner called the APSS back and stated that there had been no improvement after doing the cold compress and vitamin E oil. The APSS assistant recommended applying more vitamin E (apply to application sites and let sit about 20 minutes), bathing (LDWD), giving the dog diphenhydramine (1/2 tablet now and 1 tablet tonight), calling back with questions, and give medication as directed (prednisolone). On October 1, 2015 the owner called the APSS to continue the case. The owner stated the dog had not shown any improvement since the day of the exposure and she had done all the recommended cares (bathing, cold compress, vitamin E oil, and diphenhydramine). The APSS assistant relayed the APSS veterinarian's recommendation to take the dog to the veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information. On October 2, 2015 the owner called the APSS back to inquire if they could get the company to pay medical treatment; she has not taken the dog to the veterinarian as she cannot afford treatment. The APSS assistant recommended taking the dog to the veterinarian and contacting the manufacturer (to discuss payment for treatment). On October 5, 2015 the owner contacted the APSS and stated the dog was still symptomatic and she had not taken the dog to the clinic for further exam or treatment. The APSS assistant recommended continuing treatment (as discussed previously). Off label use-wrong dose of product used.
