1-40498853 - The reporter, a veterinarian, indicated that a cat was exposed to a spot-on insecticide containing the active ingredient methoprene and to an unidentified flea and tick collar with unknown active ingredients. The pet owner applied the collar to her 7-year-old, female cat to treat an active flea infestation one week prior to initial contact with the registrant. The collar was removed 3 days after it was applied because it had not yet helped with the fleas. The pet owner then applied the registrant spot-on product. The cat was then noted to be lethargic and anorexic which is the reason it was brought to the veterinarian. At the time of the initial call the veterinarian indicated that the cat still had a lot of fleas, her gait was unsteady and blood work showed a packed cell volume of 12%. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient in the spot-on product has little to no toxicity in mammals; it only affects immature fleas. Based on the described symptoms and blood work the cat was likely suffering from flea bite anemia. On follow-up call, one day later, the reporter indicated that the cat was bathed and sent home. The veterinary clinic had just recently called the pet owner and they were told that the cat had passed away at home. The veterinarian thought the death was due to anemia secondary to fleas. No further information is available.
