On 18-May-2014, a 11 year old, 15 pound, neutered male, Domestic Shorthair feline, in good condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions was administered 1 tube of Advantage II Large Cat (Imidacloprid-Pyriproxyfen) topically by the owner.

On 19 May 2014 the cat was found deceased. A necropsy was performed by (name) State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. The results of the necropsy revealed a diagnosis of: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Chronic intersitial nephritis, Urolithiasis and a gastric trichobezoar. Case summary: The primary findings in this cat are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and chronic intersitial nephritis. No lesions suggestive of any particular toxicity are found. Presumption is spontaneous arrhythmia precipitated by the cardiac change caused the sudden death. The intersitial nephritis is suspected to be an incedental finding. The impact of the renal failure on the potential toxicity of Advantage II to this cat is uncertain, but considering the wide margin of safety for this product, there is no reason to suspect it as a factor in this patients death.

Death not expected after product application, as inconsistent with pharmaco-toxicological product profile. Time to onset is short as adverse event have been reported in close proximity. However necropsy was performed in this case. According to necropsy lesions suggestive of any particular toxicity are found. Presumption is spontaneous arrhythmia precipitated by the cardiac change caused the sudden death. The intersitial nephritis is suspected to be an incedental finding. The impact of the renal failure on the potential toxicity of Advantage II to this cat is uncertain, but considering the wide margin of safety for this product, there is no reason to suspect it as a factor in this patients death. Finally product relation is unlikely.
