Treatment / Traitement
(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On July 22, 2013 the owner noticed that the cat had an abnormal gait. On July 24, 2013 the owner noticed that the cat was anorexic. Later that day the owner bathed the cat 3 times in a row. On July 25, 2013 the owner took the cat to the veterinarian, where the cat was observed to be anemic; it is unknown what treatments may have been given at the clinic. On July 27, 2013 the cat died. On August 13, 2013 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that Etofenprox is classified as both a pyrethroid-like insecticide and a non-ester pyrethroid; it is safe to use on cats and dogs and does not result in tremors or seizure activity that can bee seen from other pyrethroids since it is structurally different. The APSS veterinarian also stated that oral exposures often result in hypersalivation, nausea, and possibly hiding because of the taste. The APSS veterinarian said that some animals will hypersalivate just from the odor of the product. The APSS veterinarian stated that the cat's anemia was most likely secondary to fleas, or some other underlying condition; it would not be due to product use. A necropsy was not available to determine the cause of the cat's death.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation and that anemia was considered to have a high likelihood of causing the clinical situation.
