1-35319022 - The reporter, a pet owner, indicated that his cat was exposed to an insecticidal spot-on product containing the active ingredient methoprene. The pet owner applied the product to his 9.5-year-old, female cat two weeks prior to initial contact with the registrant for treatment of an active flea infestation. Per the reporter soon after the product was applied his cat started vocalizing. The reporter spoke with his veterinarian who recommended that he bath the cat with a hand dish washing soap which he did immediately. After the bath the cat seemed okay but the next day the cat stopped eating and drinking and in a period of 3-4 days his previously large cat had lost a lot of weight. The reporter was unable to take the cat to his veterinarian due to limited finances and she passed away at home one week after the product had been applied. At the time of the initial call the reporter had already buried the cat. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient in the product has little to no toxicity in mammals. There are numerous possible causes for the described symptoms and without pre-mortem diagnostics or a post-mortem necropsy the cause for death cannot be determined. No further information is available.
