1-34379786 - The reporter, a pet owner, indicated that her four cats were exposed to a spot-on insecticide containing the active ingredient methoprene. The reporter indicated that she applied the product to her 10 year old, female, 9 pound mixed breed cat (Subform III #1), to her 10 year old, female, 10 pound domestic shorthair (Subform III #2) and to her two other cats 19 days prior to initial contact with the registrant. One day after product application all four cats stopped eating and drinking water and then callers mixed breed cat (Subform III #1) and her domestic shorthair (Subform III #2) died suddenly. The reporter took her other two cats to a veterinarian and blood work showed they were both anemic. Vitamins were prescribed to treat the anemia. The reporter was advised that the product has little to no toxicity in mammals and the described symptoms are not consistent with exposure to the product. Per package labeling the product prevents maturation of fleas but does not kill the adult flea. A severe infestation with adult fleas may result in anemia, anorexia and sudden death. No further information is available.
