Troubles de la reproduction
There were a total of 7 colonies in the bee yard. There were 7 affected colonies and 5 dead colonies. There were 1501-2000 dead bees per colony observed inside and outside. After the adverse effects there was a noticeable decline in foraging. Bees appeared very cold. They were crawling slowly away, confused and falling down. There were no queens, since no eggs. Adult bee symptoms included shaking/trembling/twitching, crawling and disoriented. Brood symptoms included dead larvae/pupae on bottom board and overall decline in brood production. Queen symptoms included queen that stopped laying and failure of colony to re-queen itself. There was a significant impact.Samples of honey comb taken from affected hive, capped honey comb, had no detected active ingredients. Samples of pollen taken from affected hive, capped honey comb, had no detected active ingredients. Sample of dead bees taken from affected hive, located outside, had positive detects for carbendazim and diuron. Samples of live bees taken from unaffected hive, a strong hive in affected yard, had no detected active ingredients. Samples of water, from creek, had no detected active ingredients.Sample of vegetation, corn cobs and tassels, had positive detects for clothianidin. Samples of vegetation, goldenrod, had no detected active ingredients. The weather at the time of the incident was sunny, dry, 20C at noon Aug 15, low humidity. Prior to the incident, there were an average of 7 frames of bees, 10 frames of brood, and 10 frames of pollen and honey. The following pests were present in the affected bee yard in the past year; chalkbrood and wax moth. After the incident, there were an average of 2 frames of bees, unsure of how many frames of brood, and 0 frames of pollen and honey. It was unknown if previously noted disease(s) or pest(s) got worse after the incident. Additional food sources provided to the bees included sugar syrup for the first time this year 2013, but never before. Started this from a recommendation by OMAFRA inspection visit in Aug 2013. In 2012, the following treatments were applied to the hives: formic acid. Information on crops located near the beeyards: Corn field located 50 m from the beeyard. Cornfield throughout. Another corn field was 50 m from the beeyard. Initial call: Airport sites surrounded by corn. Prior to this, she noted that the bees were in good shape. Bees were found dead inside the hives, not outside. Live bees are not flying and are acting like zombies. Queen is not laying and that the hives smell like death. Last year BK went from 22 hives to 2. This year she started with 21 and is down to 7.
