1-33734435 - The reporter, a veterinarian, indicated that a cat may have been exposed to an herbicide product containing the active ingredient iron HEDTA. The veterinarian reported that a 5-year-old, male, 17.73 pound, domestic short hair was seen ingesting some grass from an application area. It was not indicated when the product was applied and how soon the cat was in the area ingesting the grass after application. At the time of initial contact, the reporter indicates that the cat is suffering from general malaise, has soft stool and a painful cranial abdomen. The reporter was advised that ingestions of small amounts of the product may result in transient gastrointestinal irritation and very large ingestions could result in iron toxicity and corrosive effects to the gastrointestinal tract. The reporter was further advised that ingestion of grass in the application area would typically result in very minimal exposures to the product and is unlikely to pose a toxicity concern. The reporter was encouraged to consider other etiologies for the described symptoms. On follow-up call, six days later, the reporter indicated that the cat was treated in the hospital for one day with ampicillin, buprenorphine, subcutaneous fluids and activated charcoal. PLI testing looking for pancreatits was negative and blood work showed a stress leukogram with mild decreases in lymphocytes. The animal had diarrhea for one day and then symptoms resolved. No further information is available.
