On February 24, 2013 the owner applied 9.0 milliliters (mL) of the product to the dog to prevent fleas. That morning, the owner also applied a cat spot on treatment to a cat, and the owner thought that the dog licked an unknown amount of the cat product off of the cat's fur.

On February 24, 2013 the owner noticed that the dog became unresponsive, had a seizure, and died a short time later. Later that day, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the signs were not consistent with the use of the dog spot on product and that if the dog licked up the entire contents of a vial of the product, nothing more than mild stomach upset would be expected. The APSS veterinarian also stated that the ingestion of the cat spot on product would not be expected to add to the risk, even if the dog had groomed the cat. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner have a necropsy and call back with questions.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substances were not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. Several hours after the initial call to the APSS, the owner called the APSS to update the case. The owner decided not to pursue a necropsy.
