Formulated in tablets - each table containing 140mg of strychnine alkaloid. The pesticide was applied at bait sites established within the Little Smoky Woodland Caribou population range. Each tablet was inserted into a 5 cm x 5 cm cut of moose or deer meat - the cubes of meat were frozen after insertion of the pesticide tables. Two frozen cubes of meat so prepared were buried within piles of snow surrounding a draw bait (all or a portion of a frozen wild ungulate carcass). The draw bait contained no pesticide. Snow piles were placed between 20 to 30cm from the draw bait. Method of pesticide application, including procedures for establishment of bait sites, were all complient with Government of Alberta standard procedures and requirements. The application has been reviewed and is consistent with animal care requirements adopted by the Government of Alberta.

Three of the dogs died immediately at the baiting site, presumably rapidly after digging out and consuming meat cubes contaiining pesticide tables. The fourth dog travelled approximately 1.5 to 2.0 miles before digging. The four dogs were the property of a trapper and were unattended and free ranging when they encountered the bait site. It is unknown how much pesticide was ingested by each dog. Exposure occurred only on the one occasion.

19. Donner des renseignements additionnels ici

Pesticide was applied as part of the wolf owned by the Government of Alberta to protect the Little Smoky caribou population from extirpation. This wolf management program has been successful - without wolf management, achieved considerably through the effective and managed use of pesticide.the Little Smoky caribou population would have already disapeared. The dogs in question were owned by a trapper on an adjacent trapline. The dogs were free roaming and were probably chasing and harassing wildlife, in contravention of the Alberta Wildlife Act. The bait site was established at an appropriate distance from the trapper's cabin and the site was fully signed with warning signs indicating a pesticide application. The trapper was offered compensation for the dogs, however, he declined. The bodies of the dogs were recovered and incinerated.
