10/26/2012 3:03:25 PM The manager of a pest control company called to relay the report of a canine fatality that he became aware of. An employee of his company placed 2 ounces of rodenticide product in tamper-proof, labeled boxes at a clients house on July 17, 2012. A neighbor of the client has called the pest control company and reported that his/her dog died recently. Per the neighbor, the dog ate a mouse that was poisoned by the rodenticides. The manager felt that the neighbors story didnt really add up, adding that t he had discussed with the neighbor that he did not think there was a risk of the dog being poisoned by eating a poisoned mouse. He would like to know if there are any concerns with a dog eating a poisoned mouse and if death would be expected. He would also like to know if he can have the neighbor call with any further questions. Unfortunately, the neighbor neglected to provide any details about the dog including breed, age or weight. It was explained that this rodenticide does pose a risk for relay toxicity. However, dogs typically need to eat a fairly large number of poisoned mice or rats at one time or they need to be chronically ingesting them. If the dog has any underlying medical conditions, has had previous exposure to rodenticides, or is chronically ingesting the mice, poisoning may ensue following smaller ingestions. We encouraged the neighbor to contact us so that a better understanding of the facts could be obtained. No follow-up was received.
