8/30/2012 Caller/Owner reports that her dog was sprayed with this flea product on 8/27/2012. Soon after the application the dog was seen licking herself. Within 24 hours of the application the dog developed recurrent vomiting that had persisted to 8/30/2012. The owner was instructed to promptly take the dog to a veterinary hospital. Follow-up with the owner on 9/4/2012 had revealed that the owner took the dog to a veterinary clinic on 8/30/2012 where owner stated the veterinarian "shoved a bunch of tablets down her". The dog was found to be in liver failure and the owner was informed that there is nothing that could be done. The dog died in the evening of 8/30/2012. No necropsy was performed.

The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and can not form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews. Any relationship between the use of this product and the liver failure reported in this case is inconceivable and lacks biological plausibility. When considering the body of regulatory data and post-marketing data as well as the weight of scientific peer reviewed evidence on the active ingredient used in this product such a causal relationship appears to be scientifically implausible. Permethrin is a pyrethroid and is not known to be hepatotoxic at a concentration of 0.25%. Even if true pyrethroid toxicity were it would manifest with acute neurological complications, primarily in the form of tremors and ataxia which were not reported in this incident. Furthermore, a necropsy was not performed on the expired animal in order to determine a cause of death.
