On April 13, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat had an isolated episode of vomiting. Shortly after, the owner removed the flea and tick collar because she thought that might have been the cause of the cat's symptoms. Later that evening, the owner observed that the cat began hiding. Soon after the cat began hiding, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner give the cat a taste treat of milk or canned food to get rid of the taste and monitor the cat at home to see if signs develop, and call back with questions.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a medium likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On April 17, 2012 an APSS assistant called the owner to update the case. The owner stated that the cat was no longer hiding on the morning of April 14, 2012. At an unknown time that day, the owner placed the flea and tick collar on the cat as recommended. At an unknown date and time, the owner also gave the cat a taste treat, monitored for GI signs, and monitored the cat at home for signs after reapplying the flea and tick collar.
