On the morning of May 5, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat was hypothermic and weak. Half an hour later, the owner noticed that the cat was recumbent. Shortly after that, the owner observed that the cat died. On May 7, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that etofenprox is classified as both a pyrethroid-like insecticide and a non-ester pyrethroid and that it is safe to use on cats and dogs and does not result in tremors or seizure activity since it is structurally different than other pyrethroids. The APSS veterinarian stated that due to the pet's acute death, she was more suspicious of a cardiovascular disease, and that the death was not from the product. A necropsy was not available because the owner had buried the cat. The APSS veterinarian referred the owner to the product's manufacturer to discuss the situation.
