On October 23, 2012 the owner noticed that the 2 dogs had a behavior change and did not come to eat as usual that evening. On October 24, 2012 the owner discovered that both dogs had died. On October 25, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that anticoagulant rodenticides can cause internal hemorrhaging 3 to 7 days post-ingestion and that with early detection after ingestion, decontamination would be possible. The APSS veterinarian also stated that after decontamination, either the prothrombin time (PT) can be monitored at the baseline, 48, and 72 hours or the pet could be started on vitamin K1 prophylactically at 3 to 5 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) for 21 to 30 days, followed by a PT 48-72 hours after the last dose. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner have a necropsy performed on the dogs if he wanted to try to find out the time of death; however, a necropsy was not available. The APSS veterinarian also recommended that the owner call back with questions.
