On January 8, 2012 the owners noticed that the dog was behaving erratically, running into a sliding glass door and running his face into the ground; had an isolated episode of inappropriate defecation of a solid stool; and had a seizure. Soon after the owners noticed the signs, they called their regular veterinarian and rinsed the dog's coat and skin with cold water from a hose. A short time later, the owners observed that the dog died. On January 9, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the initial erratic behavior could be a reaction of the skin or flea bites to the alcohol in the product, that death would not be expected, and that underlying cardiomyopathy should be considered. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner have her regular veterinarian call for information. A necropsy was not available.
