Starting on April 15 and continuing until April 28, 2012, the dog was exposed via an unknown route to two herbicidal products that the landlord had used on the owner's lawn. On April 30, 2012 the owner bathed the dog with the shampoo product, and the dog may have ingested some of the product as well. About an hour later, the owner noticed that the dog was mildly lethargic, anorexic, exhibiting anti-social behavior, and drooling. On May 1, 2012 the owner noticed that the dog's lethargy had worsened. On May 2, 2012 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that if some of the product were ingested during bathing, short term nausea and retching could be seen, and resolution of the signs would be expected within minutes. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner take the dog to the veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substances were not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. On May 9, 2012 an APSS assistant called the owner to update the case. The owner stated that on May 2, 2012 she confined the dog to her crate and administered water via syringe, but that later that afternoon the dog died and a bloody discharge from her anus was observed at that time. A necropsy was not available.
