On an unknown date at an unknown time the owner placed a flea and/or tick collar on the cat. Between August 8, 2011 and August 10, 2011 the owner applied the spot on product to the cat to treat for fleas.

On August 24, 2011 the owner noticed the cat was lethargic and was symptomatic. On August 26, 2011 the owner's regular veterinarian contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that dermal hypresensitivity could be seen from the use of the spot on product. The APSS veterinarian also stated that the labeled use of flea collars on cats could cause a mild dermal reaction and that some cats may have behavior with collars as well. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the regular veterinarian perform a diagnostic evaluation, provide symptomatic and supportive care, and call back with questions.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the spot on product was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. The APSS veterinarian stated that the flea and tick collar was considered to have a low likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On the afternoon of August 26, 2011 an APSS veterinarian called the regular veterinarian to update the case and was told that the cat had been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI). An additional follow up was not performed, because additional information was not expected. Therefore, the outcome of this case is unknown.
