On October 18, 2011 the owner noticed the dog had a behavior change, had erythema at the application site, had pruritus, and was hesitant to move. On the morning of October 18, 2011 the owner noticed that the dog was inappetent and adipsic. Later that morning, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that permethrins and pyrethroids can cause a tingling sensation to the skin. The APSS veterinarian also stated that some animals are more sensitive to the ingredients than others, and may experience rolling, hiding, vocalization, clingy behavior, lethargy, reluctance to move, or have an abnormal gait. The APSS veterinarian said that signs often resolve after bathing and with topical applications of vitamin E and cool compresses, but it could take up to 24 to 72 hours. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner bathe the dog with liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD) and rinse well, break open a capsule of vitamin E and apply it to the irritated area, apply a cold compress, monitor the dog at home, consult with a veterinarian, and call back with questions.
