On October 3, 2011 the owner noticed the cat was symptomatic. On the morning of October 10, 2011 the owner took the cat to her regular veterinarian, who performed a complete blood count and had a chemistry profile done. Later that morning, the regular veterinarian contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the ingredients in the product have a good margin of safety in cats and significant systemic effects are not expected. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the regular veterinarian bathe the cat, provide symptomatic care, and call back with questions.

On October 18, 2011 an APSS assistant called the regular veterinarian to update the case. The regular veterinarian stated that the cat was discharged from the clinic on the evening of October 10, 2011 and that the lab work was all within normal limits. The regular veterinarian also stated that on October 11, 2011 the owner discovered the cat had died. A necropsy was not available due to the amount of time that had passed since the cat died.
