1-27315450- The reporter, a pet owner, indicated her animals were exposed and insecticide containing the active ingredient methoprene. The caller indicated she had applied the product to her two female seven pound domestic long hair cats within one day of her initial report. Both animals were reported to have developed tremors and had one seizure within twelve hours of application. One animal had been brought to the veterinarian and treated with methocarbamol, the other had not been brought to the veterinarian at the point of the initial call. The pet owner also indicted she had applied an unidentified flea and tick topical drop to her dog preceding the observed symptoms. She had expressed concern the cats may have groomed (licked) the dog product from the dog. The pet owner was advised the feline product that was applied to the cat would not be expected to elicit the signs seen. She was advised to wash the animals with a noninsecticidal shampoo and pursue the matter further with her veterinarian. Concentrated canine pyrethrin/pyrethroid spot-on type products can result in significant problems if ingested by cats. The caller did not respond to follow up attempts.
