Citadel Totes (10 totes) were reported to be collapsing while shrink wrapped, 5 per pallet. The totes are 115 Litre size, and were in a storage facility in Winnipeg. Upon inspection - 10 totes had collapsed inward from the sides. No spill occurred. IPCO was notified by the warehouse vendor due to concerns of tote failure. All 10 totes were inspected for leaks with a negative result. The warehouse vendor was requested to return the 10 totes to IPCO Winnipeg.
IPCO Winnipeg upon receiving the 10 totes identified that the totes were collapsing due to internal materials contracting. The tote is sealed without self venting bung. An internal investigation has begun to review the filling process, self venting bung alternatives, and allowing filled material too cool before sealing the tote for sale. Returned collapsed totes are currently being held to determine is they will expand without the collapse memory. If test fails, totes will be deemed as unusable. Test to review filling process, self venting bung, material cool down to be concluded by May 1, 2011. Upon completion and confirmed no contracting tote condition, process improvements will become standard practice within IPCO Winnipeg facilities.
