1-23343431- The reporter, a veterinarian, calls to indicate exposure of an animal to an insecticide containing the active ingredient permethrin. The caller indicates he has had a call from a client that reports they accidentally applied a canine topical flea and tick drop (for dogs 30 pounds and over) to a kitten the day prior. The client has reported the animal is now having tremors. The animal is en route to the clinic for evaluation. The veterinarian asks about course of action. The caller was advised concentrated pyrethroid products designed for use in dogs are strictly contraindicated for use in cats and the label of the product indicates such. The veterinarian was advised of decontamination procedures, signs typically seen, established supportive treatment protocols, and prognosis. On routine call back the next day clinic staff reported the one pound animal presented the day of the initial contact with the registrant. It was reported the animal has had tremors, seizures, mydriatic pupils, and is hyperthermic. The animal had been bathed in a non-insecticidal shampoo and given Phenobarbital (unknown route). The caller was advised of standards of care and proper pharmacologic intervention. The reporter indicated they had a limited pharmacy and the owner had financial concerns. On a second routine call back clinic staff indicated the animal failed to respond to their attempts at supportive care. The owner elected to euthanize the animal. No further information is available.
