1-22193416: A reporter (cat owner) called on 04/08/2010 to report the exposure of her cat to a flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, the product was applied to 3 cats on 04/08/2010. Within 45 minutes, Cat #1 (1st Subform III) was rolling on the floor, scratching its neck and panting. The reporter had wiped the application site with a damp cloth, but the signs were persistent at the time of the report. The other 2 cats were asymptomatic. The reporter was advised that the product contains Methoprene which has very little to no toxicity for mammals. Adverse effects are not expected. The reporter was also advised that the cat may be reacting to the feeling of liquid on her neck. A recommendation was made to bathe the vat in lukewarm water and a non-insecticidal shampoo. A hydrocortisone spray may be used if dermal irritation is noted. The reporter was advised to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian should the signs persist or worsen in order to rule out other causes for the cat's behavior. On follow up, the reporter stated that the cat also developed a red tongue after product application. All of the cat's signs resolved by the night of the report. The other 2 cats remained asymptomatic. No further information was obtained.
