1-21964940: A reporter (cat owner) called on 03/18/2010 to report the exposure of his cat to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredients Methoprene and Phenothrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat on 03/16/2010. The cat was found gasping in the street later that same day. According to the reporter, the cat did not appear to have been hit by a car. The cat was brought in the house and ate a small amount and drank from the caller's hand. The reporter was getting ready to take the cat to the veterinarian when it died. The reporter took the cat's body to the veterinary clinic for a post-mortem examination. Results were pending at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that cats can be very sensitive to flea and tick products. The product applied to the cat was a dog product; dog products are too strong for use in cats and utilize a different active ingredient than the cat products do. Cats cannot metabolize the dog products and it is very dangerous to apply concentrated flea and tick products to cats. Severe signs can result including tremors, seizures, and death. As soon as it is realized a mistake has been made and a dog product has been applied to a cat, the cat should be bathed several times in a hand dish washing soap like Dawn with water for decontamination and should then immediately be seen by a veterinarian for treatment. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
