1-21779219: A reporter (cat owner) called on 02/26/2010 to report the exposure of her cat to a canine topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat on 02/25/2010. On 02/26/2010, the cat was agitated, vocalizing, tearing the hair out around his neck, and not eating. The reporter called the veterinarian and was instructed to bathe the cat. The cat had been bathed with dish soap, but the signs persisted. The reporter was advised that concentrated canine pyrethrin products may result in severe problems if used inappropriately on cats. The signs typically begin within 30 minutes to 3 hours of exposure, but may be delayed for up to 12-24 hours. A recommendation was made to bathe the cat thoroughly in hand dish soap and lukewarm water and then taken immediately to a veterinarian for treatment. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive including maintenance of hydration and regulation of body temperature. On follow up on 03/01/2010, the reporter stated that the cat had been taken to the veterinarian and treated with Robaxin. At the time of the report, the cat was doing well except for scratching at the application site. The reporter was advised to speak with the veterinarian regarding this. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
