1-18723497: A reporter (dog owner) called on 06/05/2009 to report the exposure of her dog to a flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product had been used on the dog several times in the past without problems. The reporter applied the product to the dog on 06/04/2009. Within 5-10 minutes following product application, the dog developed violent shaking and tremors that lasted for 30-90 seconds. At the time of the report, the dog was unwilling to come out of the bathroom/bedroom, was lethargic and not eating. The reporter was advised of the active ingredient and its mechanism of action as a slow release product. The reporter was also advised that while the product is generally well-tolerated, individual animals may rarely have a sensitivity to an ingredient in the product. A recommendation was made to avoid the use of products with the same class of active ingredients in the future. A recommendation was also made to bathe the dog in a non-medicated shampoo or hand dish soap. The reporter was advised to speak with her veterinarian regarding other flea and tick products for her dog. No further information was obtained.
