1-18750449: A reporter (veterinarian) called on 06/08/2009 to report the exposure of a cat to a flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat on 06/06/2009. Within 30 minutes of product application, the cat started vocalizing, rolling around, seemed uncomfortable, and her nose changed from light pink to dark pink. The cat's owner rinsed her with water and brought her to the veterinary clinic. On presentation, the cat's nose was a normal color and she was asymptomatic. The reporter washed the cat with dish detergent and administered an antihistamine and a muscle relaxant. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient is an insect growth regulator and does not have any action on adult fleas. The reporter was also advised that fleas may become more active after product application which can lead to signs of agitation. The active ingredient has very low mammalian toxicity and reactions are not expected with normal product use. It is recommended that any cat that develops signs following product application should be bathed thoroughly and evaluated for other causes for the signs. No further information was obtained.
