1-18690521: A reporter called on 06/03/2009 to report the exposure of her cat to a flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat on 05/27/2009. On 05/30/2009, the cat was not drinking his evaporated milk like usual and by 05/31/2009, he had stopped eating altogether and was not using his litter box (no urine or feces seen). On 06/01/2009, the cat was outside while the reporter was at work. When she returned home, she found him lying very still and not moving in her neighbor's yard. She was unsure whether he had sustained trauma. The cat was crying, unable to stand, and had difficulty swallowing. By that evening, the cat was salivating and in respiratory distress. The cat died at home that night. He was not evaluated by a veterinarian. The reporter was advised that the product has a wide range of safety and a low level of toxicity. The reporter was also advised that the signs described are not expected with product use. A recommendation was made to consider other causes for the signs and to discuss the incident with her veterinarian. No further information was obtained.
