On September 3, 2008, the owner noticed that the pet had ingested approximately two tablespoons of the bait, and with the help of a veterinary assistant she induced vomiting. Later that evening, owner took the dog to the veterinary clinic where activated charcoal was given. The owner then contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian contacted the attending veterinarian and recommended the dog's vomiting be managed post emesis and that Vitamin K be given. He also recommended symptomatic care be provided, that the pet be monitored for hypernatremia, and that the central nervous system and electrolytes be monitored. He also recommended checking prothrombin times 48 and 72 hours after the last dose of Vitamin K . The dog began to tremble and became hyperthermic later that evening, so the attending veterinarian gave diazepam and propofol and provided fluid therapy. Early in the morning on September 4, 2008, the pet began to seizure and died an hour later.

The APSS veterinarian stated that this substance was not related to the clinical situation and stated that the signs were consistent with acute hypernatremia due to activated charcoal. A follow up was not deemed necessary, as no additional information was expected.
