The owner took the pet to the veterinarian on November 7, 2008. At that time it was noted that the pet appeared mentally dull, disorientated, had hypothermia, was in a stupor, and had intermittent episodes of bradycardia, bradypnea, and torticollis. The veterinarian treated symptomatically, gave fluids, thermoregulated the pet, bathed the pet after thermoregulation, and monitored both respirations and cardiovascular function. At the time of the call the pet's lethargy had improved to mild, the mental dullness to moderate, disorientation to moderate, and both the hypothermia and stupor had resolved. The APSS veterinarian did not recommend any treatment beyond what the attending veterinarian was implementing. The APSS veterinarian recommended a necropsy and that the attending veterinarian call for information regarding the necropsy.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. The postmortem analysis showed that the cause of death was herniation of the brain secondary to swelling of the brain. No apparent cause of the cerebral edema was determined. Potential toxic causes for cerebral edema include hypernatremia/water intoxication, bromethalin, and alcohol intoxication. The dog also had a large open fontannelle and was in poor body condition, indicating that there may have been some pre-existing issues that contributed to its death. Signficantly, no evidence of insecticide was present in the brain on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bacteriology results were unremarkable.
