1-17042467: A reporter called on 12/06/2008 to report the exposure of four cats to a topical flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, fleas were seen on two of the four cats. The product was applied to all four cats on 12/05/2008. At an unknown time following product application, all four cats developed signs. Cat #1 (1st Subform III) had developed hair loss at the application site by the time of the report. The reporter had rinsed Cat #1 with plain water. Cat #2 (2nd Subform III) was vocalizing. Cats #3 and #4 were hiding (3rd Subform III). Diarrhea with blood in it was found in the room where Cats #3 and #4 stay, but the reporter could not be certain which cat or cats were having the bloody diarrhea. The reporter was advised that the product has a low order of toxicity and a wide range of safety. The reporter was also advised that the product is not expected to cause bloody diarrhea. The reporter was advised that as the product dries, it may result in an unusual sensation or irritation on the skin which could lead to hiding or vocalization. A recommendation was made to bathe all four cats with hand dish detergent and tepid water, making sure that the cats are washed thoroughly and kept warm while drying. A recommendation was also made to try to determine which cat is having bloody diarrhea by looking for evidence on each cat¿s hair. The cat or cats that are suspected of having diarrhea should be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the possible cause and appropriate treatment. An attempt at follow up was unsuccessful. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for the use on aged cats (defined as cats older than 10 years of age).
