Malathion has been used for many years to control insect infestations of stored grains. Previous studies have indicated the potential for malathion residues to occur in stored grain commodities. Currently, the PMRA has established a MRL of 8 ppm for malathion in raw cereals; PMRA has not yet established MRLs for stored or other wheat commodities. In a recent study conducted in the United States to support export tolerances, the magnitude of the residues of malathion and two breakdown products (malaoxon and desmethyl malathion) were determined in wheat grain, aspirated grain fractions, and in various processed commodities derived from the treated wheat grain. In this study, an EC formulation of malathion was applied to the walls a storage bin prior to loading untreated grain into the bin for storage. As the grain was loaded into the storage bins, a malathion dust formulation was applied to the bulk grain. After loading, the dust formulation was applied to the top layer of the grain in the bin. A second application of the dust formulation to the top layer of the grain was applied 60-days later. Samples were harvested 30-days after the last application. In this study, residues of malathion and/or break-down products were detected in stored wheat and several processed commodities for which no MRLs have been established by PMRA. The study has not yet been finalized, but the preliminary results and the incident report submitted to the US EPA is attached.
