History: Unknown Hartz Flea and tick shampoo applied to the kittens a few days ago. Unknown Home Premise flea spray used in the house. Caller is Veterinarian who was presented with 2 less than 6 mo female DSH kitten that range in BW of 3.5-4#. The kitten's owner's applied product to both of the them 2 wks ago ~9-12-07 and then again only a 1/2 applicator to each kitten this morning as the fleas were still present. Kitten #1: Less than 6 mo, but more than 3 mo 3.5# DSH female on presentation has tremors, increased HR and a fever. This kitten was bathed at the animal hospital with a non-insecticidal pet shampoo. She was also treat with Intra-Rectally Valium. Kitten #2: Less than 6 mo, but more than 3 mo 4# DSH female on presentation has very slight tremors. This kitten was bathed at the animal hospital with a non-insecticidal pet shampoo, but no other treatment at this time. Veterinarian is asking what to do for treatment? She has researched on the internet that Methoprene is not considered harmful. NOTE: After probing Veterinarian the client also has dogs. She will ask her client if any product was applied to the dogs as well or if the wrong product was applied to the kittens. Assessment: Discussed with the caller this product does contain Methoprene which is an IGR and works on the eggs and larvae. Symptoms as reported and described is not typical of the product. Was something else applied to the kittens, walk on the newly treated carpets/rugs, dog product applied to the kittens, kittens sleep or lick the dogs, etc? Recommend if the kittens were exposed to Pyrethroids to treat the kittens for pyrethroid toxicity which is with Methocarbamol, fluids IV or SQ and supportive care. CB and spoke with Veterinarian to let her know she can also give Benedryl inj or oral to the kittens. NOTE: Veterinarian did speak with the Owner, did not apply any dog product to the kittens. The dog's were treated last month. She did spray the house heavily with: Control Pet Care System Home Flea + Tick Killer AI: .25% Permethrin and Methoprene Wondering if the kittens were exposed to the wet or damp spray? Kitten #2 is recovering very well and less tremors seen Kitten #1 is improving and her bad tremors are improving as well. Note: Caller states the kitten's owner's are not in the financial position to to hospitalize the kittens at and ER Veterinarian overnight. The Animal Hospital does not have methocarbamol on hand.
