Owner sprayed her three 13 wk old kittens with the spray on Monday, 7-9-07 on their shoulder blade areas and rubbed it in with her fingers. She then used a flea comb to remove some of the fleas. Yesterday morning, 7-10-07 Kitten #1 was seen shaking in the afternoon. She called her Vet and her Vet told her to bathe her and the other 2 kittens with a people shampoo and give them some milk, which she did. Last night the kitten was shaking and was "lying on her side and spinning circles." She thought the kitten was cold and wrapped her in a blanket and then went to bed. Caller woke up this morning and found the kitten dead where she has placed her. Caller still has the kitten and has placed her in a plastic bag. Kitten #2 a male 13 wk old DSH was seen shaking this morning and his eyes have matted discharge to them. Kitten #3 a Male 13 wk old DSH that is ASX. Caller is asking if the product she sprayed is related to the kitten's death and the 2nd kitten's symptoms. Assessment: Discussed with the caller the spray contains a small amt of an OP called Tetrachlorvinphos. Explained SLUDGE type symptoms to the caller and some CNS symptoms. Recommend to the caller due to the 2nd kitten's symptoms to have this kitten as well as the 3rd kitten evaluated/treated by your VET as soon as possible today. There is an antidote which is called Atropine. (name) is calling back to see if there is anything else she can do at home for this kittens. She states that she has financial constraints that prevent her from seeking appropriate vet care. She has taken the cats to a vet, and his suggestion was to give fluids to "flush out the product". It is unclear whether the cats are still at the vet or not. Caller states her vet is not familiar with the use of atropine in this situation. She has given the kittens a bath already. The remaining two kittens are showing symptoms at this time. Assessment: I recommend you take the kittens in to the vet. There is not anything more you can do for treatment at home. Recommend giving your vet the case number and have him call in directly for treatment information. 07/13/2007 Follow-Up There are 4 kittens total affected - 1 died. The other 3 were taken to vet on 7/11/2007, shortly after call here. The third and fourth kittens (we did not previously know about the fourth) began to have symptoms after phone call. As of this AM, 2 of them are doing better, the third was still having tremors. The DVM wishes to keep overnight for monitoring. It is not clear to caller if 4th kitten is male or female. Caller guesses that all were from same litter. All kittens were found and bottle-fed by caller. ***Caller indicates that core (cooler) that contained expired cat was stolen from or outside of DVM clinic; this was reported to the cops.
