On approximately 22-Mar-2023, a 4 year old, approximately 3.6 kilogram, neutered, male, Spitz - German Pomeranian/Chihuahua crossbred dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions, was administered 1 application of Hartz UltraGuard Pro Dog Shampoo 18 oz Can (Methoprene / Phenothrin (Sumithrin) / Pyriproxifen (Nylar)) via the topical route by the animal owner. No ingestion of product was witnessed. Approximately 6 hours post product application, the dog developed gagging, anorexia and diarrhea. On 23-Mar-2023, blood was seen in the dog's stool. On 26-Mar-2023, the clinical signs resolved and the dog recovered without medical intervention. No further information was received.

Assessment: The active ingredients are present in very low concentration in this product giving it a very wide margin of safety in dogs. If ingested, mild GI upset may occur, however, GI bleeding is not anticipated. Other causes including dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasite infection, and more should also be considered. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
