On 08-Aug-2022, a 2 year old, approximately 75 pound, non-pregnant non-lactating, female, Pit Bull dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions, was administered an unknown amount of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (non-specific) (Phenothrin (Sumithrin)) via the topical route by the animal owner. The animal owner noted the dog licking itself after the bath was completed. This was a first time use. On 09-Aug-2022, the dog developed anorexia. On 10-Aug-2022, the dog developed vomiting. On 11-Aug-2022, the signs continued with seven episodes of vomiting noted. On 12-Aug-2022, the dog was evaluated by a veterinarian during an at-home visit but a cause for the signs could not be determined. No treatments were performed by the veterinarian. On 13-Aug-2022, the dog died at home before the owner could bring it to a veterinary facility. It was not specified if a necropsy was pursued. No further information was received.
Death
Assessment: This product contains a pyrethroid insecticide in low-concentration giving it a very wide margin of safety in dogs. Even if the product was ingested directly during bathing only minor, transient signs of GI upset would be expected. Severe signs progressing to death is not consistent with the toxicological profile of the product. Other causes including dietary indiscretion, GI foreign body obstruction, toxin exposure, infectious or metabolic diseases should also be considered. Without a necropsy, the cause of death remains unknown and the relationship to product use is inconclusive. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
