(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On 13-Nov-2020, a 5 year old, approximately 10 pound, unknown, male, Domestic Shorthair cat, in unknown condition, with concomitant medical condition of fleas, was administered 1 collar of Hartz UltraGuard Pro Flea and Tick Collar for Dogs and Puppies (Tetrachlorvinphos / S Methoprene) via the topical route by the animal owner. This was an extra label use as the product is only labeled for use on dogs. On 15-Nov-2020 the collar was removed. An unspecified amount of time after the collar was removed, the cat developed depression, anorexia, and adipsia. On 17-Nov-2020, the cat developed vocalization and was unable to walk (recumbent). Immediate veterinary evaluation was recommended. The cat was evaluated by a veterinarian an unspecified amount of time later on 17-Nov-2020 and diagnosed with a severe flea infestation. The cat died at the veterinary hospital. It is unknown if any treatments or diagnostics were performed. No further information was received.
Death
Assessment: Although this was a misuse of product, severe signs are not expected. The same active ingredients are used in the version of the product for use on cats. Signs also did not begin until after the product was removed. Per the pet owner, the cat was diagnosed with a severe flea infestation prior to death. Though a specific diagnosis of severe flea anemia was not provided, it is highly suspected as the cause of death in this case.
