(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On 12-Jun-2020, a 4 week old, approximately 1 pound, intact, male, Domestic Mediumhair cat, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions, was administered 1 application of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (Phenothrin (Sumithrin)) via the topical route by the animal owner. On 13-Jun-2020, the kitten died. No additional clinical signs were observed prior to death and no medical intervention was sought. A second kitten that was also bathed using the product on 12-Jun-2020 developed lethargy on 14-Jun-2020 (coded as minor severity). This was an extra label use as the product is not intended for use on cats. No further information was received in this case.
Death
Assessment: The product was misused in this case as it is not intended for use on cats. While cats are more sensitive to pyrethroid insecticides than dogs, they tend to tolerate low concentration products such as this well. The very young age of the kitten may have made it more susceptible to the active ingredient, but other causes should also be considered including congenital abnormalities, infectious disease, undernourishment, failure to thrive, and unknown trauma or exposures. Without diagnostics including necropsy the cause of death is unknown. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
