(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On 18-Oct-2019, a 8 year old, 13 pound, neutered, female, Domestic Longhair cat, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was administered 1 tube of Hartz UltraGuard OneSpot Drops for Cats (S Methoprene) via the topical route by the animal owner. The product had previously been applied to the cat on approximately 18-Sep-2019, and no clinical signs were exhibited post administration. In the morning of 19-Oct-2019, approximately 12 hours post product administration, the cat developed seizures, rear leg paralysis, and was exhibiting unspecified abnormal behavior. That evening, the cat died at a veterinary facility. It is unknown what treatments were performed. A necropsy was not performed. No further information was received.
Death
Assessment: S-Methoprene has a very wide margin of safety in cats and is not known to cause seizures, paralysis, and death following topical application. If ingested while wet at the application site, minor GI upset may occur. Other causes should be considered including underlying heart disease (e.g. hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) and saddle thrombus (aortic thromboembolism) that can lead to sudden onset rear limb pain, weakness, and apparent paralysis due to lack of blood flow to the rear limbs. A necropsy did not occur in this case so the cause of death is ultimately unknown. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
